Supporting, but disconnected

Your Church Supports Missionaries. Do Your Members Know Them?

Many churches faithfully support missionaries while most of their members could not name them or say where they serve. Psalm 67 Collective helps these churches reconnect their people to their missionaries through prayer, a yearly rhythm and small-group study.

What are the signs?

Your church is probably here if missions lives in the budget more than in church life.

  • Budget, not Sunday. Missions is a line in the budget but rarely part of worship or teaching.
  • A few people. Missionary updates reach a handful of people, not the whole church.
  • Once a year. Missions comes up at a conference or missions Sunday, then fades.
  • Tired champions. The same few people carry missions, and they are tired.
  • Drifting partners. Overseas relationships have faded and nobody is sure what's next.

Why does this happen?

It happens because support grows through budgets and committees while connection only grows through people, and nobody has been given the time, tools or plan to connect the two.

It is not a sign your church doesn't care. Churches grow, staff change and old relationships fade. Ethan has seen it in churches of every size.

What helps?

Three changes reconnect most churches to their missionaries, and none of them requires new partners or a bigger budget.

  • Know and pray by name. Help every member know your missionaries by name: a monthly prayer moment on Sunday, updates in small groups, even a missions wall in the hallway with photos and prayer requests. How can a church care for the missionaries it supports? →
  • A yearly rhythm. A simple calendar of what happens when, so missions is part of church life all year.
  • A small-group study. A study such as Explore helps people see why missions matters and where they fit. Ethan often leads the first few sessions, then hands the group to a leader from your church.

Questions from churches like yours

Why don't our members know the missionaries we support?

Usually because support runs through the budget and a few committed people, not through Sunday, small groups or prayer. Nobody has been given the time or tools to connect the two.

How can our members pray for the missionaries we support?

Start by giving every member the names and current prayer requests of your missionaries. Pray for one missionary family by name in a service each month, and invite small groups to adopt one family each.

Do we need to change who we support?

Not usually. Most churches start by connecting their people to the missionaries they already support.

Which level do churches like ours usually choose?

Most start at Premium ($200/mo): monthly coaching and two to three trainings a year.
